Carpentry Fundamentals: Weekend Shed Build

Explore the basics of small-scale carpentry for projects at home and in your community!

Class will take place from 9am to 4:30pm on Saturday, June 21 through Sunday, June 22, 2025.

In this hands-on course, you’ll gain an introduction to power tools and carpentry through the collaborative project of building a storage shed for a client. You’ll have the opportunity to read plans, review measuring and marking, and practice cutting wood using a circular saw and a miter saw.  You will also learn the basics of wall framing layout for a small structure and how to cut sheet goods accurately and safely.

As we assemble this structure, we'll have discussions about design considerations when building custom projects like this on our own. If you are hoping to take your basic knowledge to the next level, or gain more flight time using power tools in a safe and supportive environment, this course is for you!

We hope you can join us to affirm the joy and empowerment of building from scratch in a community setting!--an antidote to our fast-paced culture of outsourced builds and disposable designs.

Learn how to measure and mark wood, gain familiarity with the functions and operation of a drill and driver, and make cuts with a circular saw, a miter saw, and a jigsaw. In this introductory course, we’ll discuss settings, blades, and applications for each tool while exploring other common tools that will make your next build/home improvement project a breeze.
